Before buying your first wing foil board, you must know that there are 2 different types of styles. The freestyle surf that is more aimed towards experienced users and the freeride. We focus more on freeride which is more common and can be practiced by anyone on all experience levels.
The choice of the board is crucial, not large enough and you would not have enough stabilty to start; too large and you will find it dificult to pilot and exit the water when trying to get onto the beach.
The volume of the board can varie depending on the user and conditions; E.G. strong winds, soft winds but in perticular the weight of the user and his level of experience
Beginner : weight of user + 40kg = number of litres
Intermediate : weight of user + 10Kg = number of litres
Advanced : Weight of user - 15Kg = number of litres
The shorter the board the more sensitive and reactive it is. In WingFoil practice, the boards are often shortened whilst the width and the thickness are inrceased; this permites the volume to be sufficient for the user.
Regarding the shape of the underside of the board, many say that less "rocker" (a very flat surface) permites a better acceleration and an earlier leveling. To those that are from our experience, a concave board helps with the start and to avoid stopping during errors.
The WingFoil boards can be delivered with or without straps. The straps enable the user to navigate more engaged and helps them jump. However do not panique, the strapless is very good for Freeride especially with the beginners as it permits them to eject themselves in case of a crash.
